Visualization in XMMS?
 

Ok, here's for the stupid question of the day. How do you get the visualization plugins to work in XMMS? I've enabled some...but nothing happens. Correction, with blur scope, I get a small XMMS window, but it just stands there. What am I missing...I'm not always this clueless. :)

just a question. basically i know one of the visualizations is opengl, so do you have 3d accelerated graphics support? what vid card are you using? maybe you need that kind of support to run the visualizations.

Didn't think of that. You'd think XMMS could warn you about that after clicking 'enable'.

You opened up a can of worms here. I'm using a NVIDIA GeForceFX 5200 video card. I downloaded the nvidia driver, tried to install it, but YAST says I'm using the 'nv' driver. I haven't tried to enable 3D support, however, when I try to configure it In YAST2, it says my card does have 3D accelleration enabled. Then I go into the menu anyway and it says it's not, and asks if I'll allow the system to install the Linux 3D/OpenGL accelleration, which probably isn't as stable as the actual nvidia driver.

Think I should go back and install the nvidia driver?

so the drivers are installed or did you uninstall them? in yast can you change the driver to "nvidia"? does yast have an X configuration tool that will allow you to alter your XF86Config or XF86Config-4 file?

but you need to install the drivers without X server running. basically runlevel 3 which you can change in /etc/inittab. also it says you need the kernel source code installed.

look for this line:

id:5:initdefault:

change the 5 to a 3, save and reboot. then run the nvidia installer. edit any configuration files you need to edit. hopefully you're pretty comfortable with vi or some other console text editor.
