Visual (video) based learning for newbies?

Hello,

Many first time Linux users ask me if there is any website they can visit and learn about Linux installation, configuration, and usage thru visual means ( streaming video or download-able formats like avi, mpeg, etc )

Free access and/or download would be preferred as most users who have requested this are from India and it probably would be out budget for most newbies to buy video tutorials.

Any links would be appreciated.

why dont you make some yourself? x11-vnc and vnc2swf allow you to record flash movies from your comp screen pretty easily.. Then for eg make a tutorial install on vmware and record it.. Video content is a real bandwith eater, so video guides are rarely available.. I allways make my own when needed, but dont have the resources or will to redistibute them,,

CBTNuggets sell them for a multizillion bucks. They have a couple of free videos too, though - here.

I agree with you about bandwidth being a problem for distributing video files. I have some free bandwidth so I can distribute them online or also on media for low cost.

If you ( or anyone else ) can make them available under free license (gpl or similar) , I will redistribute them thru my website for as long as I can (afford to) . I will also give the video content provider, full credit and link to their website. The video files could also have some watermark or website url in a corner of the video.

Each video file need not be huge. Small files made on lower screen resolution (640 x 480) with lower color depth and high compression with each file of 2 to 5 minutes would help.

Contribution of even just one small video tutorial every week will help build up a good library over time.

The point is to help newbies get familiar with Linux the way they like to and audio-visual learning is a fast way to jump start using Linux.

Thanks

Yeah, I was surprised with that too, but then from a newbies point that might not be bad at all, as they try to migrate from Windows to Linux, so they get to play those tutorials on Windows.

Artanicus 03-24-2005 02:47 AM

watcha using to play back the stream?

Well, true that many a noob migrates from windows, but it realy isnt giving a grand picture of the OS if it cant play back the tutorials..

If youre going for the project seriously, just use basic mpegs or flash.. avi:s fine too, xvid/divx also acceptable in the name of bandwith conservatism.. d:

I did a few tests with ttyrec and x11rec.. ttyrec creates console playback capable recordings, very smooth, works nice, and x11rec can record anumated gifs and mngs from x11.. So, if you realy get something going, ill have lots of stuff to contribute, and the tools to do so.. (;

cbtnuggets.com says "Windows Media Player Series 9 Required. You will not see video without it." on their webpage : http://www.cbtnuggets.com/webapp/videos

So thats what I used :D

Yes, I am serious as long as I can afford the bandwidth! I am sure I can ramp up the bandwidth But first to start collecting the video files. My preferences is for download-able low resolution avi/mpeg files rather then streaming video as others can also distribute them on their websites.
