Every dual boot guide I can find for linux/vista is for an installation on just one hard drive. I have two drives in my machine, an 80GB SATA and a 120GB PATA, and I would like to install one OS on each (Don't care which). Any advice on how I should go about this? Thanks a ton in advance.
I think the reason all the how-to's are for one disc is because that's harder. I take it you want to give one disc to windows and one to linux? Just use your favored distro's installer, and have it install on whichever drive windows isn't on like normal, except put the bootloader onto the MBR of the Windoze drive.
Note: I'd google about and see, Vista might be meaner about the MBR than XP was.
YOu can have XP on one drive and Linux on another. You CAN install grub in the MBR but if you ever decide to take the Linux drive out...you won't be able to boot into windows.....YOu'll have to insert the Windows CD and run the Recovery Console and run a:
It really isn't that simple with Vista. I try to use grub with "rootnoverify (hd1,0)" which is the Vista drive but it just won't boot. Kubuntu, however, boots just fine.
Remember that GRUB's disc reference syntax is different from the canonical linux syntax. "(hd1,0)" is the first partition on the second drive. Vista will prolly complain if it's not on the first drive, so you prolly want (hd0,0).
