Visio Equivalent
Hi,
What is the Visio alternative in linux if there is one? Regards |
dia is the closest you'll get but nothing comes close to visio really.
|
in my case i use openoffice draw, you can download picture/diagram on net the you can use this in openoffice draw.
|
Dia, perhaps not as "visio" but it can be an option...and LibreOffice Draw for the odd diagram, or just for a scetch...Gimp.
Then, bring all that in Impress... Luck! Thor |
visio
Hi
Thanks for the replies. Ye I ended up using the draw from Libre Openoffice. But you right visio is one product linux does not have an answer for. But having said that I will stay with linux thanks . . . ciao |
Have you seen yed ?
|
@ almatic : hey, this thing is good, thanks!
|
yEd is a pretty reasonable tool but I ran into a few limitations since I had a bunch of existing Visio files. I stumbled across Lucidchart's alternative to Visio for Linux which I've been using for a few months. It imports Visio files quite nicely (the only tool I've seen that does this) and is free for all the things I do.
|
This is a rather bitter subject with me. I refuse to switch to windows, but Linux is not very engineer friendly yet. I've been trying to work on drawings with Dia, which is ok for really simple drawings. Horribly frustrating for anything larger. I'm a little annoyed that Autodesk doesn't release products for linux.
I'll have to check out this yed. Never heard of it. |
There are a few diagramming apps that are available (mentioned above) if diagramming is what you're after. One thing I have used Visio for that I can find no workable alternative in Linux for is diagramming my house. I have it all laid out in Visio like architectural floor plans. With overlays for electrical, HVAC, etc. Views from above (floor plan) and views looking at each wall in each room, showing door/window locations and dimensions. Took a while to put all that together (lots of work with a tape measure!), but it's very helpful to print out sheets for a given room when you're going shopping for furniture, window coverings, etc. The drag-drop-reotate-resize-connect shapes in Visio was a novel concept when the program first came out. And it's still a novel concept. Does any other app, on any OS, do this? I can't think of any. I hope that back when Microsoft bought out Visio, they paid the original developers handsomely.

Let's just note that this is a TWO YEAR OLD thread. Thanks.

Hey, Jeremy was asking for suggestions. I didn't notice the date either. As per haertig, how about a flag if a post has been dormant for nnn days?
|
There IS a flag. But not for you. If you post to something that's not been touched for, I think, 6 months, there is no quick reply box and the main reply screen has a large disclaimer. Once someone HAS replied though, clearly it's been touched so that won't appear. It's annoying huh? You say you didn't notice, but then other people register *purely* to comment on the fact that I comment that people shouldn't necropost as it gets confusing and wastes peoples time, like you found! no win!
