virtualbox still says its running evemn though I used xkill in terminal

Created a snapshot of os,pressed start, as it was starting up I clicked two 'x''s up within the virtualbox os that was booting, then it stalling i.e. black screen waited a bit nothing happened, clicked shutdown top menu, then, 'X' to close, when those two failed to shut virtualbox I went into terminal typed xkill, virtualbox closed however when I restarted it said the os in question was running, I clicked show waited nothing booted, used xkill again.

The virtual box os was working fine before all this.

xkill doesn't actually kill programs - read caveats section in its man page. Use kill or kill -9 if it fails.

That said, there's probably more elegant ways to do that.
I'm sure virtualbox itself has the ability, from GUI or command line.
Once again: read the docs!
