Virtual VMware CenTOS on a Windows 8.1 Machine
 

Hi to all I’m a newbie to both Linux and UNIX, but work within a Private environment using the systems at work. Permissions I’m able to complete the job, for over 2 years. At home I was able to download and created a VMware virtual CentOS 6.6 using a 64 bit Live DVD download on Windows 8.1 machine. Need some guidance on the commands. Any advance could guild me in right path. Thanks in advance.

Is there anything specific you are wanting to do, or just need some starter material?

There's quite a few sites with basic commands; I would recommend spending as much time in the shell as you can to build familiarity.

There's much much more than this, entire books I'm sure - but get to know how to navigate around, move and copy files, permissions and users, basic admin tasks first. If there's something very specific you need to do straight away, post what you're looking do.

keep in mind that CentOS is a rebuild of the FOR PAY REHL
and as such uses the redhat documentation


also unless YOU MUST !!! USE !!! the older 6 series for programs that are 6 ONLY
it would be best to use the CURRENT operating system
CentOS 7.1

then use the redhat documentation
( these DO assume !!! that you are an experienced redhat user and have redhat experience)

Sounds like you are already off to a good start. Creating a VM of Centos will help you a lot to study and use linux.

Lucky for you there is a lot of help online and on forums. If you don't get some point in your work ask us. Usually we try to help you out or try to offer suggested search terms. The problem with linux and unix is not so much that you don't understand the tasks, you simply don't know the correct terms to get the task done.
