Virtual Terminals

I am experimenting with virtual terminals and i am using Red Hat 8.0. When I log in as a normal or root and start GUI I press Alt + F1 it doesn't prompt me for the user name and passwd, instead it gives me a short cut.
I tried to do it in command line mode, but nothing happened.
Please let me know that how this "Virtual Terminals" stuff works.
and How can i find out as a root that how many virtual terminal sessions are going on at any particulat time.
Thanks
Ciao

when you are in the gui,
you need to control-alt-fkey to change.
when you are at the prompt a no gui
it's just alt-fkey.
you can actually run your gui
hit control-alt-f2
then login and startx -- :1
then you'll be running 2 copies of X
maybe around teminal F5 or F6, it
depends on how many terminals you
have set up.
