I'm a newbie to Linux as well but I'm using Mint 11 which is based on Ubuntu 11 and on my home network I just click network in my home screen window and my other devices are there (windows vista and 7s.. )

So you may want to try that.

Now to learn to command line process to browse the network drives. Off to the Internet for answers!
