Viewing an Ubuntu 14.04 desktop on an XP machine

Hi All
My first ever question and since it mentions MS XP I trust its in the right place!

I am trying to work on an Ubuntu 14.04 box from a PC running XP. I have installed TightVNC on the PC and enable remote on the the Ubuntu machine but when I try to connect from the PC I receive the error message:-
No security supported. Server sent security types but we do not support any of theirs.
Is there any way round this while still maintaining a secure connection?

Many thanks
Tom

The link below explains how to set this up between windows and Linux, and older version of Ubuntu but the steps should be the same. Looks like you missed out on a number steps:

Many thanks for your help.

I am now able to connect to the Ubuntu box but for some reason all I see (apart from the xwindow and its buttons) is a grey "screen" with a mouse pointer (live).

Is there something else I need to do to see the actual Ubuntu box desktop?

Thanks again
Tom

I've never used either TightVNC or xp so I can't help. There may be a missed step on your part or something else. Hopefully, someone with a little more knowledge of xp and TightVNC will come along.

Is there a reason you need a graphical view of the Linux desktop? You can do 99.99% of all Linux tasks through the command line with X forwarding. It's even built into Linux, all you need to do is install an SSH client (eg: putty, cygwin) and an X server (eg: Xming) on the Windows box. It will be fully encrypted and roughly 1000 times faster.
