view KDE calls
Hi all,
I'm a pretty new at Linux, but I got myself a book and have figured out quite a bit. I am getting fairly comfortable at the command line. Which brings me to my question: Is it possible to see commands that a UI (KDE is what I'm using) makes to the underlying OS? Or am I completely off base with this question? For example, if I launch an app (say, Mozilla) by clicking an icon, can I see the call to execute that program somewhere? If I delete a directory in Nautilus, can I see the "rm my_directory" call? Can you compile "logs" of all commands that have been issued? Thanks, Matt |
If I understand what you're asking, you can open a terminal (konsole, if you like kde) then start the app from there. So type 'kate' or 'konqueror' and it will print all sorts of messages to the console. I don't know if they are what you're looking for but have a look...

More help needed...
While I am in KDE, I open up Konsole and then open up Konqueror by typing the app name. I get the Konquerer app up in its own window. However in the Konsole, I have a message:
KDirWatch: /etc/securtiy/fileshare.conf is a file. Use addFile! and then I don't see any commands reflected in Konsole as I use Konquerer. Any suggestions? Thanks, Matthew. |
It works for me. I just tried it and I got:
Code:
kio (KTrader): KServiceTypeProfile::offers( Browser/View, ) This is what you're looking for right? Try again I guess |
man strace - beware, strace will produce a LARGE log file. it doesn't just log kde calls, it logs all calls.

This still looks like greek to me. What I am looking for is more of a Echo window this will show me what was typed on to the command line to execute the command. I am real new and still trying to figure out the difference between what is a directory, file, executable file, program and everything else Konqueror looks to me to be more of a log file.
.:newbie: |
try:
ps aux that'll show what command lines were used to launch each process |
Thanx alot, this was just what I was looking for.

As for an echo type command look into tail. man tail
common syntax: tail -f /var/log/firewall.log (hypothetical file) You will then have a window/console open that is printing all info that is being sent to that file by the program... It can be used for many things, try er out. |
so what do you do with "Use addFile?"
it looks like no human on this earth want to share THIS secret. |
