videos/music stream via Linux from Win machine

I was wondering if it is possible for me to open a file on my windows machine and just watch it on my Slackware machine? Usually on Windows if I navigate to that folder and open it, it streams the file over the network via VLC/Winamp/any media player. On Slackware when I try to do that, VLC throws an error, along with all the other programs I've tried. (I've got the windows share mounted)

I've got it figured out, but I am having terrible buffering issues. Any suggestions?

Error... Seems seriously.

Sounds like network connection.
I have good results with XBMC (has its builtin SMB client so don't need to mount smb shares).

Thanks for the responses. I figured out how to to stream the items properly via a little bit of tinkering!
