Video problems after upgrading to new ubuntu version

After installing the new version of ubuntu, my IBM laptop will not boot. The screen freezes with distorted color lines and boxes. I believe I have a Radeon video card. How do I try and boot into a safe mode equivalent? Has anyone else seen this problem?

When the computer is first booting up after post you should see a "Loading GRUB" or something along those lines. It will also say to hit any key to access menu.

This will load up a list of past kernels and there should be a minimal kernel for each called "Safe" or "Compatibility mode" forget the actual wording.

Hope this helps.

Recovery mode - single user without the bootsplash crap and you get to see the messages.
On recent versions (of Ubuntu) you wind up in an ncurses recovery menu - use the down arrow key to get to the xfix option. As it says this will attempt to automatically fix X problems. Haven't needed to try it, so can't say how effective it is.
