video problems
 

I just installed RHEL on a PC with both an onboard 810 AGP 16MB graphics chipset and an ATI Radeon 7200 with 32MB of RAM. During the install, Linux detected my graphics card as the former (AGP 16MB) instead of my Radeon. I changed thsi to the proper setting when prompted during the install. Now, when I boot into Linux, I see the verbose setup, but then the screen goes blank when it tries to change to the GUI. How can I fix this? Is there a way to try and reinstall the graphics card hardware? The monitor was configured correctly, and I did not change it from what Linux had probed during the install, so I dont think that's the issue. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

just undo the changes you made to whatevre file you made them too...

boot into single user mode (runlevel 1)
and edit your /etc/X11/xorg.config file (possibly named XFree86.config

somwhere cloe to the bottom there will be a "Driver" "somthing" section... chnage the somthing to whatever is the correct driver for your card.. or if you dont know, then set it to "vesa" then re-boot normally...

you can boot into sngle user mode by hitting "e" when you see the initial grub screen. add the number "1" to the end of the kenrel line, and boot.

Thanks for your reply. I tried to add "1" to the kernel line, as you said, but it came back with errors like"kernel panic mode" upon boot, and could not proceed. It looked like it did not understand the new character. During setup, I get the following error when I attept this:

mkrootdev: label/1 not found

Thanks, editing that entry worked. I guess Linux doesn't like ATI cards... I managed to get access to that file using the RH rescue disk.

you forgot the space... when isaid add a "1" to the end... i meat as an extra parameter... with a space......

sorry, i would have said to add a " 1" to the end of the kernel line... sorry. but it sounds like you fixed it.

and yeah.. ATI's are crap for linux support... they recently updated the drivers, but i hear there not much better.
