Newbie here. I've tried vlc, mplayer, xine and a few more, updates, multiverse, universe, gstreamer but i can't get .vob files to play. i ripped them with dvd shrink on my winxp hp pavillion dv6000 laptop. i first tried to open over network from my xp with no luck, then tried flash drive with no luck, and also putting it on ubuntu pc hd, also with no luck. it is a 1998 dell optiplex gx110 17 gig hd, pentium III 498 mHz processor, 243.7 MB ram, and a 82810E DC-133 Chipset Graphics Controler. please help.

Let me guess - you get an error message like "you do not have the required codec" or "file format not detected"?

Have you tried playing them in MPlayer - from commandline? With verbose turned up?

Have you tried playing vob files created by something like dvd::rip in gnu/linux?

Interestingly, people are also experiencing this with Windows 7
