http://www.ati.com/support/infobase/4479.html summary: either rpm -Uh --force <ati_package_name>.rpm (i would do this, but then it does say newbie next to my name. do man rpm first and see what options your rpm supports) or Remove existing OpenGL software BEFORE installing ATI drivers 1. Ensure that no 3D OpenGL programs are running 2. Remove the existing libGL installation using the following command: rpm -e --nodeps XFree86-Mesa-libGL (You need the --nodeps option because some screen savers, qt-3, and some parts of XFree86 might depend on libGL. Installing the ATI package afterwards will restore these dependencies.) 3. Reinstall the ATI Proprietary Linux driver rpm -Uh <ati_package_name>.rpm (you may ignore the --force option in this case, since the conflicting libGL has been removed already) |
ok i went for the force option this is what i got
rpm -U --force fglrx-4.3.0-3.12.0.i386.rpm *** Trying to install a precompiled kernel module. *** WARNING *** Tailored kernel module for fglrx not present in your system. You must go to /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod subdir and execute './make.sh' to build a fully customed kernel module. Afterwards go to /lib/modules/fglrx and run './make_install.sh' in order to install the module into your kernel's module repository. (see readme.txt for more details.) As of now you can still run your XServer in 2D, but hardware acclerated OpenGL will not work and 2D graphics will lack performance. failed. *** Error: no kernel module build environment - please consult readme. *** Warning *** The QT based control panel application did not load in any version. === ATI display drivers successfully installed please run 'fglrxconfig' now === so i then went to /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod and ran make.sh and i got this ./make.sh ATI module generator V 2.0 ========================== initializing... kernel includes at /usr/src/linux/include not found or incomplete file: /usr/src/linux/include/linux/version.h so what have i done wrong now????? i don really know much about linux as i am new but would recompiling the kernel help??? |
i think you need to install your kernel source and headers/includes or if they are already installed edit the makefile by hand to point to them. Kernel source is usually put in /usr/src/linux-version with a link /usr/src/linux pointing to them. When the modules are compiled they will include bits from these i think, so without them cannot compile
