Video Driver Problem

I am running mandrake 10.1 with Nvidia GeForce 4 ti 4800. My problem is that after I installed the nvidia drivers and went to change the xorg.conf and XF86Config file to change "nv" to "nvidia". it always goes back to being "nv". Is it my system doing it, why is it that everytime I save and reload it doesn't show the saved information and reverts back.
I even tried making a text file and renaming it, still didn't work the "nv" was there instead of "nvidia"

Also everytime I load into my system, my internet connection is broken and have to make a new 1 each time. Not even make it, just start doing it and the connection comes up.

Thanks for your help.

are you using your root account when editing the file? If not become root and edit the file and see what happens

yep root

what editor are you using?

rohmanovich 04-16-2005 09:29 PM

I tried editing in kate when loaded into KDE. didn't work.

did this:
1. init 3
2. cd etc/X11
3. vi xorg.conf
4.edted file
5. typed in ":save all!"
6. init 5

try this

1. open a terminal
2. su to root user
3. vi /etc/X11/xorg.conf
4. exit the file
4. :wq (that stands for write + quit)
5. log out
6. log in

well, I think I actually got it to save. But...

Now it blinks many times and doesn' load the GUI X at all. And I might have overwritten XF86Config over xorg.conf. Am I not toally screwed. Also, where can I find the logs for the X to see why it blinks and nothing happens.

yep. I have overwritten over my xorg.conf with XF86Config. What should I do now?

try reinstalling the Nvidia drivers again.

Then reboot your computer.

It probable blinks because the graphics drivers are not working properly.

Also did you remove "glx" option, I think you need to do this. Read the readme that comes with the NVIDIA drivers
