Video Configuration problem on Install

Hello,

I have just installed Mandrake 9.2 on an old laptop, a Compaq Presario 1621 (233 mhz). Upon booting for the first time, I got an error message saying my video configuration is not configured properly, do you want to run the configuration tool? In the tool, I am given a choice of monitor, video card, resolution, test and options.

I cannot find the specifics on my particular laptop anywhere on the web (The ones from Compaq are useless) but I think I have them set correctly. Everytime I select "Test" I get the following error:

"Cannot resolve display screen"

I tried to startx, but now I get a fatal server error:
no screens found

I tried to run xf86config but I get the same error. Is there anyway to just use a generic setup?

From Compaq site your "Maximum internal resolution of up to 800 x 600 x 16M"
Do pico /etc/X11/XF86Config and edit the video section to use a display of 800x600 with a color depth of 16 using the vesa driver (for now).
The you should be able to run the xf86config program and select your specifc driver for your card and the maximum resolution and color depth.

If you click on download drivers it tells you that the video card uses the "NeoMagic 2160 chipset".

Thier site is extremely slow.

I am trying to edit my XF86Config, but I don't really understand how to open the editor. I'm an extreme noob.

You said pico, what is that? I tried typing it as a command but it didn't work.

pico /etc/X11/XF86Config or nano /etc/X11/XF86Config

pico or nano is the editor and then next to it you list the file you want to edit.

if pico did not work than you probably have nano, there is many text editors available to choose from.
pico and nano are the ones I use all the time.
