Video Card/Monitor Problem

I have a P133 set up and Mandrake 8.1 is installed. I get past Lilo, choosing Linux, and everything seems to go find until Xwindows starts up. The screen goes blank and gets noisy. I've tried two different monitors and have also tried setting the refresh rates for them within XF86config-4. No help. On one monitor, colors flash, on the other, nothing at all.

Any ideas?

sounds like your using too high of a display and/or resolution mode. You said you already tried different display resolutions so then i would try a new video card.

ive done this before (it looks very pretty when you do it :D )

basically what you are doing is using incompatible refresh rates and resolutions. monitors can only sustain certain resolutions running at certain refresh rates (they'll be noted in the manual).

you have to be careful, you can fry the monitor very easily doing this (although things are better than they used to be, XFree86 version 4 tends to kill the X server is it detects that the monitor/graphics card cant handle the settings. also monitors tend to have large ranges of refresh rates so it is more difficult to break them.

look in the manual for your monitor to see what rates and resolutions your monitor can handle then configure XFree86 with this information

Thanks

Well, I ran drakxconf and changed it to a lower number of colors and that kicked it out of it's issues. Now, I just need to double check what type of video card it is (I know it's a Matrox, but I think that the Mandrake install may have misjudged what type it is). Thanks for the help.
