Vesa thing in UBUNTU

I had a browse of the ubuntu supported hardware and in the desciption for my video card an ATI Radeon X700 Pro it said: " if X server does not start with driver "ati" (first boot) change it to "vesa" "
So how can i do what it says this since this is a problem i had (before i uninstalled ubuntu) and if it could fix the my problem then i would put ubuntu back on?:

I know i gotta change the config file but do i need to use sudo in order to change the file

cheers

you've written a very confusing question there... but yes you need to be root to edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf. if you can't get into X to use an X editor, try pico, vi, nano or emacs.
