VESA incompatible with i815 video card; how can I fix?

Background info: running Slackware 9.1 on an Inspiron 2500, kernel 2.4.22; video card chipset: intel 815.

I've done some research, and discovered that VESA is incompatible with my videocard. I loaded the agp module, having read that that would fix something, but I'm still getting VESA errors when I run startx. I would greatly appreciate any advice on dealing with this situation.

Thanks!
