Very strange display problems - my windows are huge!!!!!!!!

I'm running Red Hat 9 and I've foud some very unusual display problems. I've only noticed this when I try and run Open Office or view web pages in Konqueror or Opera (it also happened one time when I opened the KDE control center). The problem is when I open any of these programs the windows are ENORMOUS with a few words filling the entire screen. Naturally, this makes the program unusable I've researched everywhere I know to look, but I can't figure it out. Anyone out there got some advice for a frustrated noob?
