very slow internet! why?

I have just installed SuSE Linux 9 and all is working well, but only hte cable internet connection is terrible slow! About 1 to 3 KB/sec while under windows xp I always have about 200 to 500 KB/sec.
Is there any utility tp speed this up?
I could use some help here.

look at the output of ifconfig and see if there are errors on the interface
