very newbie, help with setting up ethernet port on mepis

first, i'm a total newbie at this stuff, so you'll need to walk me through everything step by step...

that said, i can't get my eth0 port started up on mepis 3.10.2003. i go into the MEPIS system center and click on "network interfaces," but my eth0 port is listed as down and cannot collect an ip address from the dhcp server. does this mean i'm missing ethernet controller drivers? how should i get connected?

and i know it's a configuration thing, because this machine is dual-boot and windows networking works fine.

my setup:
dell inspiron 1100 notebook
256 ram
20gb hd (12 windows, 7.5 linux)
Windoze xp
MEPIS 3.10.2003 linux
lilo bootloader

i have never even seen mepis so i cant guide you how to configure your ethernet device via its gui

However i can tell you the bash command which will do your job

open a shell and type this command

ifconfig eth0 <your ip address> up

then type ifconfig again to verify ur ip address

i typed "ifconfig eth0 <a valid ip address for my network> up" and i got the following message:

SIOCSIFADDR: Permission denied
SIOCSIFFLAGS: Permission denied
SIOCSIFFLAGS: Permission denied

i assume this means that i don't have the right to declare a static ip, eh?

when i type: dhcpcd eth0
i get the response: bash: dhcpcd: command not found

ignoring this, ifconfig now gives me something very much like what you have for eth0, but it doesn't say NOTRAILERS, the entire second line (with ip address, mask, etc.) isn't there, and all the packets=0. it also finishes with "Interrupt:11"

You can get it from

http://www.phystech.com/ftp/dhcpcd-1.3.22-pl4.tar.gz

you can contact us again ..if you need instrustions on installing it
