Very new, introduction, question

Alright, so im a windows fan personally. never used any form of linux whatsoever .. however, i've been taking computer programming courses in school and a movie kind of got me interested in seeing how hacking works and such (Live free or die hard, good movie, badd influences ;)) .. anyways, what i want to do is hack my own wireless router or a friends (with his permission of course) .. how would i go about doing this?

i have ubuntu. . . i dont think its anything special . the CD just said ubuntu .. its 8.0.4 (or something along those lines? :S) ..

My name is ryan hence the r in the 'rto' wont explain the rest right now .. if you guys could help me out it would be a greatly appreciated, thanks alot guys/gals :)

cheers,
rto

We don't do hacking here. But, if you mean installing Linux and turning a wireless router into a wireless bridge or something like that, you might try these guys: http://openwrt.org/ I'm waiting for their next release to see if they have support for my WGT624.

Dang, quakeboy02 beat me to it. OpenWRT is one of the oldest wireless routing hacks around and it's still extremely popular. If you mean you want to 'crack' wireless routers, no one here will talk to you. But if you do manage to crack wireless networks which use WPA-* I'm sure your local spy agency would want to know the tricks.

Look for ethereal, tcpdump, wiresherk kinda tools if you're goin to hack any WEP or SSID (LOL ROFL) based WiFi. If there is WPA Enterprise 384 bit encryption, I don't know if FBI can crack it :-)

Live Free or Die Hard is good fun, but it's just a movie. Just about none of what happens in it is true or even possible.

And since we're talking about reality, "hacking" or whatever someone might possibly actually mean with this word takes an awful lot of work and time. You have to read, experiment, try, hit and miss A LOT until you begin to get some benefit from it.
