Very much a newbie with some questions
 

I am very new to Linux, in fact I am downlaoding it now... I have Windows Server 2003 and really like it but I am wanting to expand my knowledge... What do I need to know the differenced in the two? I am very comfortable with the GUI interface and that is what is scaring me so far. How easy is it to set up the web server and FTP in Red Hat, I know IIS in Server very well. What do I set my other machines on the netwrok to like to allow access to the New server, right now my Windows Server I am using workgroups. I have one network that I will trying all this on and if all goes well will move to my other network. My server will be used for file sharing, Web server, FTP server would really like VPN (could not get it to work in Windows Server) As much help as possible would be great.

They should work more or less out of the box. Don't start tinkering with the config until you have something you want to change.

If you do hcange anything then make sure you keep backups of the original config files.

So by default... Web server, FTP Server will be on? What about VPN is that in Red Hat? How do I make backups of config files?

yes the services are there by default. i am not sure of vpn. which configuration files do you want to backup?

Not sure.... You mentioned I should backup before making changes.

ya just for safety

Before you make changes to a config file eg "httpd.conf" copy to a file called "httpd.conf.orig". Once you have a working copy then before you make any more changes then save it as "httpd.conf.good". This will save you having to rebuild your config files from scratch if you make a mistake.
