very dumb question about a .pl file

I have just unzipped a tar.gz file for the first time. from what i've been reading there should have been a few files (like a help file or an install file) that unzipped to a new directory, instead i have one - and it's a .pl file (its the obsidian fserve 0.9.2 for xchat 2.0.4). can someone please help me understand exactly what it is i have to do with this file to install it, or point me to a stupid simple guide.

thanks

m

PL files are perl, However, you should have something more than a single file? Can you link us to the actual file you downloaded, or more importantly the text where you were told to grab such a file?

To run a pl:
perl filename.pl

Cool

I think it's not meant to be executed how MasterC instructed since you mentioned its an xchat script.

You have to load it from within xchat itself.

Ahh yeah, excellent observation, ;) I was piloting a massive headache last night, and must have not read the question properly :) Thanks for covering!

I got it from this site:

Thanks a lot for your help so far. yes, there was only one file that unzipped into a new directory, and i think Azmeen is right - it has to run from xchat. if you have the time or patience i would really appreciate help getting this installed from xchat. or if you know of a manual or something that would be great, as i have not found anything yet.

thanks again,

m

please? if this was windos i would have figured it out by now (actually i did in about 10 minutes). as far as i know, this is the only fserve app for xchat and there is barely any documentation on how to set it up. if someone knows about linux and the apps and add-ons that come with it could you please help?

thanks

did you go to the menu ::
scripts & plugins -- > load -- > perl script... ??

i thought about doing it, but since i have not found anything saying what to do i was not sure. i'm just scared. i'm not used to having the power of linux, i've only been doing this for a week or so. i will try it, i hope it works.

thank you,

m

ps DrOzz you've been really helpful to me on more than one occassion, i appreciate it. i'm going to post some new stuff in a minute that i'm sure will be no problem for you, if you feel like helping again. thanks.
