very basic VPN question (PPTP; settings for Gateway, NT Domain)

I've used Linux for over 15 years, so I don't qualify as a noob, but have only now had to deal with a VPN. I've received instructions that say to connect to an organization's VPN thus:

VPN Type: PPTP
Address: server.their.domain.com
User: my_username
Password: *********

and that's all. On Xubuntu 16.04 I have tried to set up the VPN connection with the GUI (screenshot attached). It offers PPTP as a connection type, so I infer support for that protocol is installed. It prompts for NT Domain and Gateway, and that's where I'm stuck. I've attempted sticking their server address in one field or the other to no avail.

I think I'm missing something fundamental. Do I have to be subscribed to a VPN service and get these settings from that provider? Do I need to fiddle with my own firewall rules?

Gratefully,

My understanding is that this is a private VPN, so you wouldn't need to be subscribed to a "VPN service".

You would need to have VPN software installed, however. I am familiar with openvpn from the command line, but I would suggest you look into Ubuntu's package for openvpn - knowing Ubuntu, it probably has a GUI.

Cheers !

Thanks Rickkkk, for the insight about not needing a 3rd-party service. I've already got the VPN software, I think. I believe the problem is something else. I've since found https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1246241 so I guess I will go back and beat my head on it some more.

Google for the 2 terms pptp and linux, and the first hits are very informative.

If you're alluding to https://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/howto...tp-client.html, I've read that. They lost me at "Now you need to dial out to your office VPN server" and the reference to a "call" subcommand. I'm not clear if "dial out" and "call" refer to a telephone. The article is also pretty old.

But I might as well give it a shot.
