Ok, here's how I did it (Mint 17.3 Xfce):
. Downloaded veracrypt-1.17-setup.tar.bz2 ("VeraCrypt Linux Setup 1.17") from
https://veracrypt.codeplex.com/releases to Desktop
. Right-click on veracrypt-1.17-setup.tar.bz2->Extract here
. Double-click on veracrypt-1.17-setup to enter the folder, then right-click on the folder contents->Open in terminal
. In terminal: ./veracrypt-1.17-setup-console-x64, then "1", accept licence etc...
. as above for ./veracrypt-1.17-setup-gui-x64
. VeraCrypt is now available and working in the system menu section Accessories
