Vector Linux installation: graphics & GParted problem

1 Attachment(s)
Hi,
I posted this on the VL forum a while ago but no replies, so wondered if anyone here might be able to help? Is this the right forum?

Just trying the VL64 disc but it won't load on this pc. Gets to the display resolution choice page, then of the several options I've tried, including Auto Detect, the screen (analogue monitor - the DVI one stays dark) goes to a mess of pale bar colours (attached pic). I've let it sit for >10mins & nothing happened and the only way to get out from this is to physically shut the pc down.

PC is oldish:
Dual Xeon 3.2gHz
Tyan S2676 mobo
NVIDIA GeForce 6600
4gb RAM

I've run Lubuntu 64bit Ok so it can do it...

I did see something about the Nouveau video driver & that not liking older hardware - to blacklist it: how does one do that?

Is this a red herring?

BTW gets past this stage on an XP Dell 9200 so image would appear to be OK. (although got a different issue with that as gparted won't resize the NTFS partition due to "error while loading shared libraries". I've spent some time googling this but got nowhere. Not sure how to proceed with this either.

Can anyone advise please as I prefer Vector to Lubuntu?
Cheers

odd
i have never had an issue ,even with the "new and improved NTFS" in win7
gparted-live-0.13.1-2.iso

or
use SystemRescueCD

but gparted should work
uncheck the partitions , format and leave it a blank unformated disk or a ext3 disk
then let the vector installer do the formatting and partitioning

currently what is on this WorkStation ?
How is it partitioned ?
and so on

NVIDIA GeForce 6600
might be an issue ,it is a "pci Express" or "agp 8x"
thought the 304 driver dose say it supports it

however the open Nouveau driver should work fine

The Nouveau driver IS THE ONLY driver that will work with some older hardware
I have a 11 year old Gforce 2 MX 400 ( yes a 2 ) and the Nouveau works just fine
The card is TO old for Xorg support

BUT
your "NVIDIA GeForce 6600" is not DEAD YET .
Close to it. It is on it's LAST driver support ,nvidia IS killing off the old cards .

so do not black list the Nouveau , use that for installing

What version of vector ?
VL64-7.0-STD-FINAL.iso
or the 32 bit

Hi mogmog,

Vector is slackware based. Yes you prefer Vector than Lubunto, but my question, what about comparing Vector with other distros to solve the problem? I suggest you try Absolute Linux, like Vector it is Slackware based. I have tried this distro many times at even slower and older machines and Absolute Linux never failed me even once, it always easily solved anything backward in the machine, and one more thing: like I said it is Slackware and is very stable and easy to manage both as a standalone or at network.

By the way, if latest Absolute Linux cannot solve your problem try to install an earlier (older) version of Absolute Linux, a version released just about the year your hardware platform was published in the market. I usually do that.

Good luck.

It may be a silly question, but did you check the Vector download and is your disk burning reliable? A video problem is common enough, but to have that and a gparted problem sounds suspiciously like a bad disk — particularly if Lubuntu gives no problems.

If you like Vector, you'd like Salix, also Slackware based but much closer to the original. The last time I tried Absolute it was a bit of a mess.

On my second install. I run a Nvidia chip way way older than yours Ok with the first (number 1) boot option on install page. Just look at my inxi readout and you will see the Nouveau driver being used. It is 32 bit Vector Std Gold 7. I agree with DavidMcCann about doing a md5sum check and using good quality disk media for making the bootable disc for Vector. I tried using some cheaper disks (cdr) and failed miserably even though the md5sum check of downloaded iso was good. Changing media disk solved that problem for me.

On the Laptop in that post. I picked the vesa option instead on that boot Window because it was a first install and I was just playing it safe. Vesa is usually pretty bullet proof on getting you to a Desktop.
