Vector linux 6.0, line is not 8 bit clean
 

Hi! This my first post here. I am using Vector linux,and chestnut-dialer from terminal as root. My modem dials, connects hangs up, than gives the error message: "serial link is not 8 bit clean then "problem all had 7 set to 0, then "modem hang up". I am dialing by typing /sbin/vsuper/ chestnut-dialer. Once I can successfully dial from here I plan to go to dialing from my desktop with the dialer. I have an actiontec modem, v92, which was or is linux compatible. I have the hand book or manual with some suggestions for configuring with linux. Web search for Serial link is not 8 bit clean brought me here, so thought it might be best to post here, first. I have Vector linux 6.0 or the latest version. Thanks if someone can help...Frank

Subsequent edit on 3/30/09. I figuired the problem after 6 days and countless hours of searching on the net and posting here and got no replies. No hard feelings, I understand most people, including myself use DSL most of the time or cable. In my case, using default or wrong init string was the problem. This Actiontec internal pci v.92 call waiting modem, uses or needed. ATS10=1. I experimented with other distros. First I still had my Suse 8.0 install Cds and its Kde kppp had option to edit init string. Newer Kde Kppp dialers dont seem to have that feature. I could be wrong but mine didnt. I last went back to Vector Linux distro and it offers a dialer, Chestnut dialer that has other options, but in particular the option to edit init string. Without that option, I have little use for a dialer. Websearching for is "is not 8 bits serial clean brought me to his sight.
