Vector Linux 4.0 - Bootloader

I am having a rough go at the installation of a bootloader for vector linux 4.0.
running liloconfig does nothing and then returns me to shell.
lilo.conf does not exist.
running vasm and asking it to setup the lilo bootloader does the same thing as liloconfig (returns me to vasm menu and does nothing)
I can mount FAT floppies but cannot mv or cp files from them without getting an I/O error
I am able to boot up with a VM 4 boot disk but it is VERY undesirable (I am running a Toshiba Satellite Pro 420CDT with a huge external FDD that i definitely don't wanna be lugging around.

Any suggestions on how to fix this mess without going through install process again (with a 100Mhz Pentium and 4X CD-ROM it takes hours to complete installation)

I am a linux newb so preferrably post advice in language that we common folk can understand.

Thanks guys

JT

Can you build your own /etc/lilo.conf by hand?
If so, just Google for how to ...

Problem Solved

Got it fixed thanks anyway. I had a /boot partition and lilo didn't like it. needed to install on MBR
