usplash randomly quits

I'm running ubuntu intrepid, and have been using it happily for a while. on a separate partition of my HD, I installed gentoo. While doing this, it changed my HD numbering scheme, so I had to use the ubuntu installer to set up grub again. I changed my fstab and mtab to the new HD numbers.

However, now when I boot, Usplash comes up, but before the progressbar starts loading, it quits and goes to terminal mode, always around "reading files needed to boot." I'm using the time-based usplash from gnome-look.

I've tried running update-grub and update-initramfs, and neither have fixed the problem. Does anyone know what might fix this?
