Using Synaptic from DVD
After installing Debian 7.3 there is no Networking. I tried to install more Net packages in Synaptic. It asks to insert DVD, but gives a message "Cannot catch CDROM..." I used (as admin)
#apt-cdrom add The cdrom was added, but nothing changed Another issue: I tried to reinstall Debian from that DVD but -- though CD drive is a default in the boot sequence -- it always boots from HD now. I am not sure whether these related issues. Thanks for any hints. |
There are more than one dvd in this set and it may ask for a different one than the one you have.

Fenario,
Thanks but this is not a problem. The DVD inserted is the same as asked. Maybe the issue is that DVD is in /media/cdrom0 (with '0') while in the sources.list file it is just cdrom; so, I have directories /media/cdrom and /media/cdrom0 where the DVD is mounted. Shouldn't cdrom0 (DVD) be a subdirectory in /media/cdrom/cdrom0? |
Could you please post the results of the following commands for a better analysis,
as normal user: Code:
$ lspci | grep -i net Code:
# ifconfig -v Code:
# mii-tool Regards |
Network
Thanks ukiuki for your response. I cannot post the results of the commands at the moment. I am on another machine. The wired connection seems to proceed but asking for a password. I am not sure what password is meant as I never set one, except the admin password which is not accepted for the connection... Do you have any idea what password Debian is asking for the ethernet connection? Typically I use wireless, but this does not work at all. I have:
BCM43228 802.11 a/b/g/n and BCM5761 Gigabit Ethernet PCIe Thanks. |
Sorry ukiuki,
I found where to enter the network password.... There is still no wired connection but it's not Debian problem. The Windows on the same and other machines also cannot connect through the ethernet to the network. However, the same (wired) modem provides good wireless connection through the router. I have no idea how that happens... That's why I tried to update from DVD to get possibly wireless driver for the device I listed before, but the Synaptic and aptitude cannot see the mounted DVD (I can open files in it), and report that they cannot mount...
