Unhappy using software mgr questions

in software mgr, i have downloaded items listed, but now they are not accessible thru the menu...where do they go? I go back to the software mgr and it shows they are installed now...but I cannot figure out where they have gone, or how to get them to now work. A good example is CHEROKEE INTERNET SEARCH ENGINE....downloaded it an hr back...wanted to use it and set as default and cannot do so. another item i downloaded earlier this morning was pidgin privacy, similiar title, not sure exactly...same thing. any suggestions would be most appreciated...thanks folks

Like the other "2,000" command line tools,
I don't think you will get a menu entry for any of the above.

cherokee example : $ sudo /usr/sbin/cherokee
$ sudo /usr/sbin/cherokee-worker

I remember that there used to be an internet browser that the school district used on their computers NAVIGATOR...they used apple computers I think. I worked for a couple yrs as a janitor then....i liked it, worked really well. Have downloaded Opera....not a huge is so so in my humble opinion, will remove it also...would love a better internet browser. Dont like the fact that google shares and profits by my browsing. I would appreciate any suggestions on A) good internet browser, B) how to install it after downloading it, C) how it is better than google.....any other info appreciated as well thanks for your time and expertise!

Firefox is already included in Linux Mint, and that is a good and secure web browser. The other Web browser suggested can be SRWare Iron if you really like to have two browsers.

For search engine use Duck Duck Go. Dont try to use what you used four or five years ago because the concerns from back then are totally different at what are now.

Also keep in mind that you might be installing tools that are meant to be use on the back ground while your system is running so there wont be a graphical interface for them.

perhaps you would want to do a search before installing them to make sure they infact have GUI.

Good luck to you

thank you for the great info, I am not used to linux mint 13 yet, so I am doing a lewis and clark type thing now,,,EXPLORING WHAT I CAN DO....sometimes for a newbie like myself, that can be a daunting task, and it can mess things up as well...TRIED DOWNLOADING OPERA again...still dont care for it much...gonna remove in moments....thought safari might be the ticket, but for some reason downloading it a few times would not work for some reason....SO....GONNA stick with what is the default internet browser and quit fooling with everything and duplicating what is already included in the mint 13 cinnamon MAYA ed pkg. be a safer thing no doubt...THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR THE INFO...GONNA GIVE UP ON WEB BROWSERS...STICK WITH THE DEFAULT STUFF...THANKS STEVE IN ST JOSEPH MISSOURI USA..GRAYBEARD19

The first thing to do when you install a program is to update the data base "updatedb" I have a cron job that does that for me at midnight every night, but at times I don't like to wait.
