Using separate partition for software installs

I want to use the /opt directory as a general software directory, so that when any user downloads software they can install it in the /opt directory and any other user will be able to use it. I have /opt mounted on a separate partition for this purpose.

I seem to run into problems with permissions, however. The entire directory has 777 permissions, so it seems that any user should be able to run any executable file in the directory.

But, strangely enough, when I install a program (take Firefox, for example) in the /opt directory, I have trouble running it. I get "permission denied" errors for all users, even the one that installed the program in that directory.

Is it possible to arrange the system so that any user can install to the /opt directory, and any other user can run the software located there?

I love theses forums - I have learned a lot and I keep coming back for more

Realize that by trying to do this this way you are circumventing one of the major security features of linux.
