Using PuTTY, commands etc for a novice...
For the first time I need to use a command prompt to set some variables and other tasks that I am completely lost with. I am basically a complete novice with with this, I have downloaded PuTTY but I'm not sure where to start - in terms of what connection to use and how to connect to the site I need to make changes on.
The site itself is just hosted on a fasthosts shared server, not sure if this creates issues? Anyway like I say I am completely new to this, I just hope I can manage to get a grip of the basics and it's not a huge amount that I need to do with it. Many thanks in advance for any assistance! Thanks, Laurie |
It is probably worth telling us exactly what you need to get done. That said, I'll take a stab in the dark. Putty is an ssh client - it basically gives you a terminal (a text interface) as though you were sitting at a keyboard attached to a remote server. To use ssh, you're going to need the hostname (e.g., someserver.example.com) and a username and password. Do you have those things?

Keep in mind that usually shared hosts do not have ssh access, so putty won't help you much if that's the case with your host.
