Using memory stick

I have a memory stick. I want to mount it. I read that you have to do something along the lines of:

mkdir /mnt/usbstick
mount /dev/sda /mnt/usbstick

I was going to do that but I have no driver called sda in my /dev directory. Can someone shine some light on this for me.
