Using Linux on a windows environment?
 

I know this question has been asked many times, and I did some searching also but, I could not find any simple answer. We have a Linux(Xubuntu) box here at work, it works well in a PIII computer which we have many in around the office not being used now. We use a Proxy server, Exchange, Novell.This is a non-profit company so we were looking at the option of having linux instead of Windows. Can someone give me a list of what do I need to install in this machine in order to print to a network printer, receive email(We use Outlook and I was trying to configure thunderbird with no luck), connect to network drivers, send IM inside the LAN, and everything else you normaly do in a Win environment. We use Novell to log in to exchange server. Is this possible with Linux? Thanks for the help....

I would say split up your list and look at each component separately on the web for appropriate replacements. But here's my recommendation (you're bound to get others):

Printing - CUPS (the package name in Ubuntu will be cupsys, I believe)
Email - Novell Evolution (should also be in the Ubuntu repositories), I think this should let you login to the exchange server and even use the calendar functions
Network Drives (I assume you mean drives, not drivers) - Samba for Windows shares, NFS for unix style shares
IM - Gaim (good for msn, yahoo, aim, icq, etc) or specific linux client like aMSN for an MSN network

Like I said, I would look at each thing you want to do and then look on google or here or here for a linux program that's equivalent.

I wish I could add anything to what pljvaldez already said, but he appears to have covered all the bases.

You said "...works well in a PIII computer which we have many in around the office not being used now." If all of these computers are identical or nearly so, you can use partimage to "ghost" the configuration to all these machines. Install and configure on one and clone it to the other machines.
