Do you have the nswrapper plugin installed?

If you don't know:
1. in konqueror, open the settings -> configure dialog.
2. on the side, go to plugins.
3. click the "Plugins" tab
4. If you see a netscape icon and the words "Netscape Plugins", it's installed. Otherwise, it's not.

nswrapper lets netscape plugins be loaded in konqueror. Adobe's Flash, Java, and any other firefox plugins will need it to run.

If you have a JRE correctly installed, Konqueror may need a pointer to the Java directory. That would be located within Konquereor setup, preferences, or something like that.

Konqueror does NOT need any plugins to use Java.

You're right... sorry, I had my settings mixed up. Brain fuzz for a moment. Nswrapper is needed for flash and some other plugins, but java is an executable...

If you installed Sun's java, it's in /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/bin on a Debian system; your mileage may vary. Let me check real quick here.... the setting is in Settings -> Configure, the Java & Javascript option on the side, then enter /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/bin/java in the box labelled "Path to Java executable, or 'java'".

NOTE: that directory may be different. I only know debian's offhand .

Konqueror needs to be pointed to the executable file, not the directory (I am not sure if that's what you mean, but just to make sure we're on the same page).

A couple of things you might check:
- is the "java" option checked in the Tools -> HTML Settings menu?
- Is the "Enable Java Globally" checkbox checked in the java & javascript settings dialog? (Settings -> Configure -> Java & Javascript, the checkbox is about a third from the top)

Since it's working in Firefox, I presume some setting in konqueror is the cause. We just need to find out what setting it is .

I tried for a long time about 6 months ago with no success to get Konqueror to work with java, even when it appeared to be properly configured it refused to work.

You may be able to fix your font issues by installing the msttcorefonts package, this makes Windows fonts available to your Linux operating system. I've also noticed that some fonts don't look right in Firefox because of the size, try holding the control button and rolling your mouse wheel to shrink the font size.

Try this article or this one. They seem to offer the same solution so it looks like disabling pango is your best bet.
