Using Kate editor as root?

Okay, I know it is not good practice to login as root. So I often "su" when I use a terminal program. However, let's say I want to use the "Kate" editor to edit a config file... Is there a way to open the file and make changes in "Kate" as root even though I am logged in as a "regular" user?

Yes you can:

Open an xterm
type su -
enter root password
type kate filename
It works because I just tried it

You can also try
su -c "kate filename &"
In that case you'll have to enter root pssd. After you finish your job with kate the super user mode will be terminated, and you'll have a regular user permissions in the console.
