using grub with XP

Anyone know how to set up grub to also boot XP. And also what is the validity of that fixmbr warning it gives you before you run it in the recovery console for XP. It tells you that you might not be able to access your partions after you run fixmbr?

Usually you use something like
Code:
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
chainloader +1
to load your windows system partition(where ntldr is located)
The MBR contains the partition table, therefore if you tinker with it there's always a chance that things might break.

thanks I can get windows to run when I change the commands in grub to

rootnoverify (hd0,1)
chainloader +1

but I can only do this at the boot screen and it wont save the changes. It defaults to

rootnoverify (hd0,4)
chainloader +1

which is wrong. I suppose I need to change this in grub.conf but how do I open this because it tells me from the terminal that access is denied. As u can see I know basically nothing about linux. THis is my first time usin it. thanks for the help

You need to be root in order to modify it, just type "su", enter your root password, then use your favorite text editor to modify it.

well I am root but it still tells me that "access is denied" in the terminal.

If I go find the file it says Nautilus has no installed viewer capable of displaying "/boot/grub/grub.conf".

Try "vi /boot/grub/grub.conf" as root.

Or, use emacs, gedit, nano or the editor of your choice!
