Unhappy using exim4 and fetchmail , but still can't fetch any

Hi, i trying to get gmail and hotmail to my debian etch homeserver using
exim4 and fetchmail, but i'm not able to fetch any of my mail ,
noticed that hotmail "will be of a problem" ,
i made a fetchmailrc file as the "user" i needed to create at install (not root)
first i tried the "system-wide" way and was getting a message like "don't run as root", but know fetchmail is not "on" by default or it doesn't start,
i haven't yet gotten a mail since i installed the server ,

i read all the howto's , there's more about postfix which i was considering, but acttually i just want to read my mail

can anyone show me the WAY !

Here are a couple of things to read.

When using google to research Linux issues, go to www.google.com/linux. In this case, I entered search words: debian exim fetchmail.
