Using entire SCSI HDD as Samba share

Hi there, new here.

I did a search hoping to find an answer to my question, but all I came up with for the most part is that what I want to do is possible.

That aside..

I am deploying a Mandriva 2006 (test) file server on a Windows 2k3 domain. I was pretty impressed that it took me all of 5 minutes to get Samba up and running and joined to my domain. I had no problem creating new shares on the hard drive and getting them to be able to transfer files to/from my other windows boxes on the domain (or rather, on a completed seperate workgroup that could see the domain).

My problem came about when I attempted to try and share my second SCSI HDD. I opened the disk management tool, formatted the drive, mounted it under /var/hdd2 (yes horrible place, I will be changing that to /mnt/hdd2 or something of the sort tomorrow), and then created a share in the Samba manager with full read/write permissions (I am creating all shares first with no restrictions, and I will buckle down once I have all the kinks worked out). I walked over to my domain controller, opened up "My Network Places" and navigated to the new share I created which was visible, and I could surf to it.

Upon trying to place a test document into the new share, I got the error "Cannot find specified path" (or it may have been "specified file"). Now I am guessing this "specified path/file" is in reference to something on the file server, as it is quite clear where the text document was that I trying to place in the server.

As I am sitting here, I realize I didn't try adding files to it locally, which I will also try tomorrow. I just wanted to throw this out there and see if anybody had any ideas on what I may have done wrong.

Recap: I cannot add/remove files from a SCSI HDD created as an entire Samba share located at /var/hdd2.

Have you tried simply creating a single directory on that HDD, and then sharing that?

This folder can then grow to the size of the entire disk / parition as regards its contents...?
