You are saving the file after you change it aren't you? Just checking.
They may be updating the servers and this may be what the problem is. I have had it sometimes that when they update the server in Australia I cannot update my system. The regular non us repository is still located in the us so that may answer why you are still not getting anything. I would recommend waiting a few hours and try again then. If it still doesn't work we will have to dig a bit deeper. Anyway I'll be gone till morning, here in Australia, I'll check again in the morning to see if you have been able to update after waiting a while.
It appears as though your setup has a proxy for some unknown reason. Follow the instructions in the 2 threads I have linked for you and see what happens.
alright, I cant seem to figure out how to get permission to edit the /etc/network/interfaces file and I would need to do that to do everything on the thread you gave me, I tried
Quote:
gedit /etc/network/interfaces
but it tells me
Quote:
No protocol specified
(gedit:17426): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0.0
and when I manually go to the file and open it with gedit I cant change anything, also when I go to the properties and permissions it says that root only has permission to read/write. how do I change the permissions or open it as root? in my root terminal it gives me the same gripe.

Type in a terminal
Code:
su
enter your password then type
Code:
gedit /etc/network/interfaces
that should give you permissions to edit the file.
Yes, I thought that I did it wrong because I still saw some errors, but I just updated my programs and installed a game as a tester, so that problem has been solved! Thanks for your help, Im going to try and solve my other problems on my own, if I cant figure it out Ill come back .
