How do I enable and use hibernation, which someone has told me Linux is capable of? I know how to get to the power management screen, but I did not see any hibernation controls. If I am going to use Linux instead of Windows, I insist that it be able to hibernate.

do you have acpi working? if you run acpi in the console, what happens? You also may need to download the kernel patch for software suspend 2 from www.suspend2.net. I believe that makes it easier to do a hibernate than the software suspend option in the kernel. You would then need to install the hibernate package(I don't know what distro you're using, in debian, the command would be 'apt-get install hibernate'). Hope this helps:)

Well, if I want to use the pre-installed ACPI for the moment (until I learn how to patch a kernel), how do I do it? To answer your question, I guess I don't have it working. I did find the power management screen, but I didn't see any suspend/hibernate option, or any instructions on how to suspend or hibernate.

in debian, you have to have acpid, and acpi installed. acpid runs acpi in linux. the program acpi allows you to check the battery life. I've never had any success getting hibernation working. I haven't yet patched my kernel for hibernation, so....
