Here are easy instructions (with screenshots) to download Ubuntu and create a bootable USB device:
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download I recommend you try Ubuntu in "live" mode before installing. |
Hi,
Maybe a small detour to a site that has all the nitty-gritty on Linux-on-a-stick... It's not that tuff, there are some things to consider. Some distros (MacPup to name one) have built-in stuff to create an install on a stick. Secondly, your "receiving" hardware needs to be able to read the stick, of course... It boils down on starting what's on the stick and wheeling it from that point on... By the way: welcome to the forum! Thor |
Thanks for the reply Snowpine. It was this site that I downdoaded on to the USB STICK I think it went OK, I can see it when I open it in My Computer. My problem starts when I try to load it on to the note book, it can't see the USB STICK and won't let me install the opperating system. Rgs Tommy

When you turn on your computer, there is a key you can press (usually one of the Fn keys, or maybe Esc) to enter your BIOS options. Make sure the USB stick is the first boot device.

Tommy, we (I mean me) kind of still don't know what you have. Did you create a live usb by following some instructions of did you simply download some file to that drive?

Hi Guys, Sorry, my first time to use a forum, I am using a Toshiba NB1OO with a replaced hard drive that I put in. I downloaded from PENDRIVELINUX.COM site on to a USB STICK. I put the USB in the notebook, start it up, F2 brings me to BIOS and I can go to BOOT, but that's it I can't go any further with the installation. Hope this makes since to ye. Rgs Tommy

What did you download from pendrivelinux? What OS is on your laptop now?
|
Sorry I can't help; I have never used "pendrivelinux" before.
If that doesn't work for you, you can try the easy official instructions here: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download |
Thanks for your time, snowpine. Hi jefro, There is no OS on the hard drive at the moment. I down loaded Universal USB Installer 1.8.8.5.exe and downloaded ubuntu 11;10 desktop
|
Then tell me this.
When you ran the universal usb installer program on a windows computer did you have the program and the iso saved temporarily to the windows hard drive? |
No, I ran it onto the USB.

Hi Tommy,
Okay. Let's do this, then. Download an Ubuntu, and burn it on a disk. Start your PC up with that disk in the drive. Hold on to your USB stick. Once you're on a screen where you can choose to either try or install Ubuntu, select "try". Let the thing come to life. Insert the stick once fully started up. In the menus (somewhere) there should be the option to make a startup disk, send the whole thing to your stick. Note that your target PC MUST be able to start up from a stick...some BIOS tweaks may be needed... Luck Thor |
