Using a ide external HD for linux

Hi Guys, my question is this. If I try and install, any distro on a ide External hard drive, Will I still get a Bootup Grub installed on my internal Windows MBR. I am thinking the answer is yes. Thank you for any answers in advance.

Cheers .

I would not be so sure it will be automatically installed there.
Nevertheless, normally you are asked to specify the place where you want to stick in e.g. Grub, a boot manager. MBR is "in front of" the first partition, so in general, that will be your "internal" hard-drive (given the naming conventions you can check yourself before the installation process) and everything should work as you expect.

If you install linux on an external drive (sata or ide or a USB hard drive), grub always installs on the external drive by default and never on the internal drive, unless you change the option while you are installing linux. If you haven't done the change while installing, be rest assured that grub will always install on the external drive. (provided that is your first boot device after CD or DVD drive).
