Users on network

Hi all.

In windows environment we have active directory concept, where users are defined. lets suppose i have a user sitting in his office and i want him to be only able to access certain applications and not the complete system, i think i can do this in windows ( i am not sure how ?).

Can we do the same thing in linux ? what should i read for this ? NIS or ldap or something else ?

Probably a combination of Ldap and Kerberos.

Another solution, for web apps, is Atlassian Crowd.
