useradd for making ftp users??

i am using webmin and i have a script that makes an ftp user automaticly.
it says that the user is succesfull added but what is the problem becouse i cant login with the user in the ftp...
the code i use is:
useradd -d $path $uname -p $pass&chmod 777 $path&echo thanx, The user is made&echo you can login with:&echo Username: $uname&echo Password:$pass

a & is for a new line and
$path is the path e.t.c. /home/folder1
$uname is the username for logging in :P
$pass is the password for logging in on the ftp

what is wrong becouse i cant login with a user i create with this "script".
