If u do not want to remove Fedora, then
u can either use bochs or vmware, and try any flavour of linux without risk ur exiting system.

You can resize your fc5 partition with gparted, or any other partitioning program
bochs or vmware are virtual machines, you run a linux distro inside a vm, which wouldn't realy work with LFS because you need an existing system to compile it, or the LFS livecd, which you would need tons of resources to make a LFS system in a vm. Can I ask you why you are running FC5 when fedora 8 is out?

You can use VirtualBox to create a virtual machine. It's nearly as good as VMware Workstation, but it's free for private non-commercial use.

Why don't you just resize your fedora core 5 partition?
